Landing Zone Kit

Landing zone kits provide helicopter pilots and crews with ground-based visual reference markers for identifying, illuminating, and securing temporary helicopter landing zones (HLZ) in field, combat, and emergency medical evacuation scenarios. These kits give ground personnel the tools to mark an HLZ rapidly and communicate its boundaries, orientation, and status to an inbound aircraft without radio contact or permanent infrastructure.

Standard landing zone kits include a combination of marker panels, lights, and signaling devices. Fluorescent orange or yellow VS-17 signal panels measure 17 inches by 72 inches in folded carry size and deploy flat on the ground or attach to stakes to mark HLZ corners and approach paths. Day-glow colors remain visible from altitudes above 1,000 feet in daylight conditions without power. Furthermore, infrared chemiluminescent sticks — visible only through night vision goggles (NVGs) — mark HLZ boundaries at night without producing white light signatures visible to hostile observers.

LED aviation marker lights on updated kits replace chemical light sticks with rechargeable battery-powered units producing steady or flashing output selectable between white, infrared, green, amber, and red wavelengths. These lights operate for 8–12 hours per charge and remain waterproof to IP67 standards for deployment in rain and wet terrain. Additionally, wind direction indicators in the form of lightweight nylon streamers attach to corner stakes — giving pilots immediate visual reference on wind direction and approximate speed during final approach.

These kits serve Pakistan Army aviation support units, Special Services Group (SSG) combat controllers, Pakistan Army Medical Corps CASEVAC teams, and Rescue 1122 helicopter operations across Pakistan’s mountainous northern terrain in Gilgit-Baltistan, AJK, and KPK where improvised HLZ establishment under time pressure is a routine operational requirement.
