COMPRESSED AIR FOAM SYSTEM (CAFS)
The Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS) is a fire suppression platform that simultaneously combines pressurized water, foam concentrate, and compressed air at a mixing manifold before discharge, producing a homogeneous foam stream with superior heat absorption, surface adhesion, and agent penetration characteristics compared to conventional water streams or standard aspirated foam.
The system architecture consists of a centrifugal water pump, a bladder tank or inline proportioner delivering foam concentrate at adjustable injection ratios between 0.1 and 6.0 percent, and a rotary screw or reciprocating air compressor feeding compressed air directly into the foam solution line. The air-to-solution ratio — typically expressed as the expansion ratio — determines foam consistency, ranging from wet foam at lower ratios for deep-seated fire penetration to dry foam at higher ratios for surface blanketing and structure pre-treatment.
Water pump outputs on vehicle-mounted CAFS configurations range from 500 to 4,000 liters per minute, with compressor outputs matched proportionally to maintain consistent foam quality across varying flow demands. Nozzle discharge distances extend 20 to 30 percent beyond equivalent plain water streams at the same operating pressure, improving standoff distance for operators during active fire attack. Total water consumption per suppressed area is reduced by 50 to 75 percent compared to plain water application on Class A fires, reducing overall water demand during extended operations.
Control panels on CAFS-equipped apparatus provide real-time monitoring of water flow, foam injection rate, compressor pressure, and air-to-water ratio, allowing operators to adjust foam consistency during active deployment.
Pakistani municipal fire brigades, industrial fire response teams, oil and gas facility fire sections, and military fire units deploy CAFS for structural, vehicle, and hydrocarbon fire suppression operations.
