Compressed Air Foam Fire Systems

Compressed Air Foam Systems (CAFS) are fire suppression platforms that combine water, a foaming agent concentrate, and compressed air within a single discharge line to produce a homogeneous foam stream with significantly different fire suppression characteristics compared to conventional water or standard low-expansion foam. The compressed air injection into the foam solution prior to discharge creates a dry, lightweight foam blanket with a fine bubble structure that adheres to vertical and overhead surfaces, extending agent contact time with burning material and improving suppression performance on Class A and certain Class B fire scenarios.

The system consists of three core components: a water supply pump, a foam concentrate proportioning unit, and an air compressor integrated into a combined delivery manifold. Water flow rates on vehicle-mounted CAFS units typically range from 200 to 2,000 liters per minute, with foam concentrate injection ratios adjustable between 0.1 and 1.0 percent for Class A applications and 1.0 to 6.0 percent for Class B hydrocarbon fire scenarios. The air compressor delivers compressed air at flow rates matched to the water output, with air-to-solution ratios determining foam wetness — ranging from wet foam for penetration into deep-seated fires to dry foam for surface coating and exposure protection.

CAFS discharge covers greater distances than plain water at equivalent pump pressures, with horizontal throw distances extending 20 to 30 percent further from the same nozzle configuration. Water consumption per unit area suppressed is reduced compared to plain water application, a critical operational advantage in locations across Pakistan where water supply is limited during extended fire incidents.

Vehicle-mounted configurations are integrated into fire tenders, while skid-mounted and portable CAFS units serve fixed facility and wildland fire applications.
