Armored SUVs
Armored SUVs are civilian-grade 4×4 or luxury vehicles reinforced with multi-layered ballistic steel, composite armor (ceramic, Kevlar, or Dyneema), and multilayer ballistic glass. Armor protection ranges from CEN B6/B7 (NIJ III/IV) to VPAM/VR10, depending on threat levels. Glass thickness typically spans 40 mm to 80 mm. Steel and composites integrate seamlessly into doors, pillars, floors, and firewalls. The added armor can weigh between 500 and 1000 kg. For example, B6 armor adds about 500 kg, while VR10 configurations for a Land Cruiser increase total vehicle weight by roughly 2000 kg.
Manufacturers upgrade chassis components to handle this weight. Heavy-duty springs, shocks, struts, reinforced axles, brake systems, and run-flat tires ensure durability. The OEM powertrains, such as Toyota’s 4.4 L V8 or BMW’s 4.4 L V8, maintain performance. Upgraded suspension and brakes help retain ride comfort and handling despite the armor.
