Vibrating Sample/Alternating Gradient Magnetometer
This combined magnetometer system supports two complementary measurement techniques within one instrument platform, giving labs flexibility to choose the method best suited to a given sample or research question. The vibrating sample mode oscillates the sample at a fixed frequency, typically 40-80Hz, within a uniform magnetic field, detecting the induced voltage signal through pickup coils to determine magnetic moment. The alternating gradient mode instead applies a small oscillating field gradient directly at the sample, measuring the mechanical force this gradient produces on the sample’s magnetic moment, a method offering higher sensitivity for very small or weakly magnetic samples.
Field strength from the main electromagnet typically reaches 1 to 3 Tesla across both measurement modes, sufficient to saturate most ferromagnetic and many paramagnetic materials during a full field sweep. Sensitivity differs meaningfully between modes, with standard vibrating sample measurement reaching around 10^-6 emu, while alternating gradient measurement can push sensitivity down to 10^-8 emu or better, useful for characterizing extremely thin films or nanoscale magnetic particles where standard VSM sensitivity falls short.
Sample mounting differs slightly between modes, since alternating gradient measurement requires a more rigid sample attachment to accurately transmit the induced mechanical force to the detection system. Switching between modes typically happens through software configuration rather than physical reconfiguration of the instrument, letting researchers run both measurement types on the same sample without remounting between tests. Temperature control accessories extend both measurement modes across a wide range, from cryogenic conditions up to several hundred degrees Celsius.
