Titanium-Sapphire

A titanium-sapphire crystal is the raw gain medium used inside titanium-sapphire laser systems, sold separately for labs building or repairing their own laser setups. The crystal starts as pure synthetic sapphire, grown through methods like the Czochralski or heat-exchanger process, then doped with a small percentage of titanium ions during growth. Doping concentration typically ranges from 0.03% to 0.25% by weight, with the exact level chosen based on absorption and gain requirements for the intended laser design.

Crystal dimensions vary by application, with common rod sizes running 4 to 10mm in diameter and 10 to 25mm in length for standard laser cavity use. Optical quality matters heavily at this stage, since internal defects or stress points in the crystal lattice reduce laser efficiency and can cause damage under high pump power. Manufacturers polish crystal end faces to a high optical finish, sometimes adding anti-reflective coatings directly onto the crystal surface to reduce losses at the interface between crystal and air.

Absorption band for pump light typically peaks around 490-530nm, matching common green diode-pumped solid-state pump lasers used in most titanium-sapphire systems. Fluorescence output covers a broad range, roughly 660-1180nm, which is why this crystal supports such a wide tunable output once installed inside a complete laser cavity. Thermal conductivity in sapphire is higher than many other laser crystal hosts, helping the material handle pump-induced heat better than alternatives during continuous operation.
