Thermal Lance
A thermal lance is a portable cutting tool that uses an exothermic chemical reaction or electric arc to generate extreme heat for rapid cutting of metal structures, concrete barriers, and other tough materials during emergency rescue operations, military demolition, and structural dismantling. This handheld device provides rapid cutting capability without requiring bulky powered equipment, enabling small teams to breach obstacles and access trapped personnel in confined spaces or emergency situations.
Cutting mechanism employs iron powder and oxygen-based chemical composition igniting at extremely high temperature, or electric arc systems providing sustained heat sufficient to melt metal. Chemical lances generate cutting temperatures exceeding 3,000 degrees Celsius, enabling rapid penetration through steel plate and reinforced structures. Oxygen supply maintains sustained combustion during extended cutting operations. Consumable lance tubes require replacement after use, with spare tubes enabling rapid deployment at multiple cutting locations.
Handheld design with protective shielding enables single-operator deployment without requiring mechanical equipment setup or extended assembly time. Cutting speed depends on material thickness and composition, with steel plate typically cut at rates of 10 to 20 centimeters per minute. Water cooling jackets prevent excessive heat buildup in the operator’s hands and surrounding structures.
