Sensors and user terminals form the input and control layer of a larger security or monitoring system, gathering data from the field and giving operators a way to interact with it. Sensor types include motion detectors, door contacts, vibration sensors, and environmental monitors for temperature or gas levels. Detection range varies by sensor type, from a few metres for passive infrared motion detectors up to 50-100 metres for outdoor beam sensors covering open perimeter areas.

User terminals give operators a way to view sensor status, arm or disarm zones, and receive alerts without needing to check a central control room in person. Terminal screens range from small 4-inch touchpanels mounted at entry points up to 10-inch tablets used by roaming security staff. Connectivity between sensors and terminals runs over wired RS-485, Wi-Fi, or a dedicated radio link, chosen based on site layout and how far sensors sit from the nearest terminal or control panel.

Power options include battery packs for wireless sensors, lasting 1-2 years on standard use before replacement, and hardwired power for sensors needing continuous operation without downtime. Terminal software often includes a zone map, showing which sensor triggered an alert and its exact location on-site rather than a generic zone number. Some terminals also log entry and exit times against user ID, building a record for later review after an incident.

Government buildings and corporate offices use sensor and terminal networks for access control and intrusion detection across multiple entry points. Industrial sites use environmental sensors alongside motion detection to monitor both security and safety conditions in one system. Residential compounds also install simplified versions for gate monitoring and basic intrusion alerts.
