Portable locators are handheld electromagnetic detection instruments used to find and trace buried metallic utilities including pipes, cables, and conduits without excavation. Additionally, passive mode detects emissions from live power cables and metallic pipes without any transmitter connection, supporting rapid preliminary identification across sites where transmitter access is not immediately available.
Frequency options cover 50 Hz passive power detection through active frequencies up to 33 kHz on standard multi-frequency portable locator models. Lower frequencies penetrate deeper soil profiles for locating deeply buried mains. Higher frequencies improve signal isolation between closely spaced parallel utilities in congested underground corridors beneath city roads and industrial facilities. Furthermore, depth estimation displays calculated burial depth in centimeters on the receiver screen, with accuracy within plus or minus 5% of actual depth under favorable single-conductor conditions. Audio tone output rises in pitch with signal intensity, guiding the operator without constant screen monitoring during the survey.
Housing on field-grade portable locators uses impact-resistant ABS or rubber-over-moulded construction with IP65 dust and water resistance ratings. Battery operation on AA alkaline or rechargeable cells provides between 15 and 30 hours of continuous operation per charge. Moreover, lightweight receiver wand designs run between 0.8 and 1.5 kilograms including batteries, keeping single-hand operation comfortable across extended field survey sessions.
