MCU Integrated Multifunctional Radar Sensor
MCU integrated multifunctional radar sensors combine a microcontroller unit (MCU) directly with a radar front-end on a single compact module — delivering detection, ranging, velocity measurement, and angle estimation from a self-contained platform without requiring a separate processing board, FPGA, or external signal processor. These modules reduce system complexity, board space, and bill-of-materials cost in applications where a standalone radar chip would require significant external processing infrastructure to produce usable output data.
The radar front-end uses frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) technology — transmitting a linear frequency chirp and measuring the beat frequency between the transmitted and reflected signals to extract range, velocity, and angle data simultaneously from a single waveform. FMCW radar operates in the 24GHz ISM band or 60GHz and 77GHz mmWave bands depending on the application — 77GHz automotive-grade modules achieve range resolution below 4cm and velocity resolution below 0.1 m/s at detection ranges from 0.1 meters to 100 meters. Furthermore, the integrated MCU runs onboard signal processing algorithms including fast Fourier transform (FFT), constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detection, and angle-of-arrival estimation directly on the module — outputting filtered target lists with range, velocity, and bearing data rather than raw ADC samples requiring external processing.
Output interfaces include SPI, I2C, UART, and CAN — connecting directly to host microcontrollers, PLCs, and embedded computing platforms without additional interface hardware.
