MagStation Magnetometer Base Station
The Geometrics MagStation is a self-contained cesium vapor magnetometer base station built for stationary monitoring of the Earth’s total magnetic field during ground, airborne, and marine geophysical survey campaigns. It records continuous time-series magnetic data at a fixed reference location — allowing post-processing software to remove diurnal field variations and solar storm interference from mobile survey data collected simultaneously by roving instruments.
The MagStation uses laser-pumped cesium vapor (Cs133) as its operating principle — a non-radioactive total field scalar magnetometer covering an operating range of 20,000 to 100,000 nT. MFAM sensor technology samples at 1,000Hz internally, with filtered and down-sampled output at selectable rates for different survey applications. Furthermore, the system weighs approximately 2kg and integrates GPS, onboard data storage, and a built-in wireless access point into a single compact housing — eliminating the separate GPS logger, data cable, and communications hardware required by older base station architectures. Magnetometer and GPS time values synchronize to within 1 millisecond for precise correlation with roving survey instruments.
The built-in GPS receiver operates at 50% CEP accuracy of 1.5 meters standard, improving to 1.0 meters with SBAS correction. Additionally, the MagStation can function as an RTK base station — broadcasting RTCM3 correction data via Bluetooth to compatible Geometrics MagSeries instruments to achieve centimeter-level rover positioning accuracy during high-resolution UXO and archaeological surveys. The MagNav Android app controls the unit wirelessly, displaying real-time magnetic field data and system status without the operator approaching and influencing the sensor. Standard delivery includes a carrying case, tripod, external battery cable, AC adapter, and Survey Manager software.
