Magnetooptical Kerr-Microscope
The magneto-optical Kerr microscope (MOKE microscope) images magnetic domain structure and magnetization processes on the surface of magnetic materials by detecting the rotation of polarized light reflected from a magnetized sample — the magneto-optical Kerr effect. These instruments give materials scientists and physicists direct visual access to magnetic domain walls, domain switching events, and magnetization reversal dynamics at micron and sub-micron spatial resolution without contacting or damaging the sample surface.
The measurement principle directs polarized laser or LED light onto the sample surface. Magnetized regions rotate the polarization plane of reflected light by a small Kerr angle — typically 10 to 100 microradian on most magnetic materials. An analyzer and polarizer pair in the optical path converts this polarization rotation into intensity contrast on the detector — dark and light regions in the image corresponding to magnetic domains of opposite orientation. Three measurement geometries are available: polar MOKE detects out-of-plane magnetization components, longitudinal MOKE detects in-plane components parallel to the plane of incidence, and transverse MOKE detects in-plane components perpendicular to the plane of incidence.
Sample compatibility covers bulk magnetic sheets and ribbons, magnetic thin films and multilayers, patterned ferromagnetic microstructures, and magnetic nanowires — with maximum sample sizes of 3 cm × 3 cm on standard stage configurations. XY motorized stage positioning with 360-degree rotation enables automated mapping surveys across large sample areas.
