Magnetometer Surveys
Magnetometer surveys map spatial variations in the Earth’s magnetic field across a defined area — detecting anomalies caused by buried metallic objects, geological contacts, archaeological features, and subsurface structural variations. These surveys generate georeferenced magnetic data maps that guide UXO clearance excavation priorities, mineral exploration drill targeting, pipeline and cable location, and archaeological site assessment without disturbing the ground surface.
Survey methodology begins with sensor selection matched to the target type and required detection depth. Cesium vapor and Overhauser magnetometers measure absolute total field at sensitivities of 0.004 to 0.01 nT — resolving geological anomalies and large buried metal targets at depths of several meters. Fluxgate gradiometers measure the gradient between two sensors at a fixed vertical separation — suppressing regional geological background variations and improving detection sensitivity to small shallow targets including sub-munitions and archaeological iron objects at depths to 1.5 meters.
Data collection integrates magnetic readings with GPS position at continuous sample rates of 5 to 10Hz — building a point dataset that post-processing software converts into gridded magnetic field maps using interpolation algorithms. Total field maps show raw field strength variation across the survey area. Vertical gradient maps computed from gradiometer data highlight shallow targets by amplifying high-frequency spatial anomalies relative to deep geological sources.
