Acoustic leak detection is the most widely deployed method for underground pipe surveys. Leak noise correlators place sensors on two accessible fittings — hydrants, valves, or standpipes — on either side of a suspected leak zone. Each sensor picks up the acoustic noise generated by fluid escaping under pressure through a pipe defect. The correlator calculates the precise leak location by measuring the time difference between arrival of the leak noise at each sensor and applying pipe material, diameter, and distance parameters entered by the operator.

Tracer gas leak detection injects a hydrogen-nitrogen mixture or helium into a pressurized pipe section. These gases diffuse through pipe defects and soil, rising to the surface where a handheld detector measures tracer gas concentration. This method locates leaks on non-metallic pipes including HDPE, PVC, and asbestos cement mains where acoustic methods produce weak signals.
