IRON BEAM - High Energy Laser Weapon System
Iron Beam is a high-energy laser weapon system developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems of Israel, designed to intercept and destroy short-range rockets, artillery shells, mortar rounds, anti-tank missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles using a directed high-power laser beam. Unlike kinetic interceptor systems that fire physical projectiles to destroy incoming threats, Iron Beam uses a sustained laser beam to heat and structurally compromise the target’s body or warhead until it burns through, detonates prematurely, or loses aerodynamic integrity and breaks apart before reaching its intended impact point.
The system operates using a solid-state fiber laser with output power in the range of 100 kilowatts, delivered through a beam director that tracks and maintains the laser on the target for the duration required to achieve kill. Engagement time per target varies from a few seconds to several seconds depending on target material, range, and atmospheric conditions affecting beam propagation. The cost per intercept is dramatically lower than conventional missile-based air defense interceptors, addressing the economic asymmetry problem where defending forces spend significantly more per intercept than attacking forces spend per projectile fired.
Iron Beam integrates with radar and fire control systems for automatic threat detection, tracking, and engagement sequencing. It operates as part of Israel’s layered air defense architecture alongside Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow systems, addressing the short-range threat tier below Iron Dome’s minimum engagement envelope.
Defense organizations and procurement agencies worldwide study Iron Beam as a reference system for directed energy weapon integration into national air defense architectures. Its operational validation provides data relevant to countries developing or acquiring high-energy laser air defense capability.
