Hypothermia - Emergency Blankets
Hypothermia emergency blankets are lightweight, single-use or limited-reuse thermal protection sheets designed to prevent or slow heat loss from the human body in cold exposure emergencies, post-trauma shock situations, and field medical casualty care scenarios. They work by reflecting radiated body heat back toward the patient using a metallized polyester film layer that bounces infrared radiation rather than absorbing and dissipating it. This reflective mechanism retains up to 90% of the body’s radiated heat output without adding significant insulation mass, making these blankets extremely compact and light for individual first aid kit inclusion.
Standard emergency blankets measure 130cm x 210cm in the unfolded state and weigh between 40 and 60 grams. They fold down to a pocket-sized package of roughly 6cm x 9cm x 1cm. The outer film surface uses vacuum-deposited aluminum on a biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate (BoPET) substrate. This construction gives the blanket its characteristic silver or gold color and windproof, waterproof outer surface that also blocks convective heat loss from wind exposure.
Military and professional-grade variants add a fleece or foam inner layer for improved passive insulation in extreme cold environments below -10°C. Some models incorporate a colored outer shell for visibility signaling in search and rescue operations.
