Helicopter Searchlight

Helicopter searchlights are externally mounted, remotely operated illumination systems that project high-intensity beams from airborne rotary-wing platforms for search and rescue, law enforcement, military surveillance, firefighting, and border patrol missions. These systems give helicopter crews the ability to illuminate large ground areas or focus on specific targets from altitude without requiring ground-based lighting infrastructure.

Light source technology across available systems includes high-intensity discharge (HID) xenon lamps, halogen units, and LED arrays. LED searchlights offer longer service life and lower power draw compared to xenon units while delivering comparable lumen output suitable for SAR and patrol operations. Beam output on tactical units such as the Trakkabeam A800 covers edge-to-edge white light with internally fitted spectral filter systems — switching between white, amber, red, and infrared (IR) outputs at the flick of a switch. Amber filters improve light penetration through mist, rain, and smoke. IR filters allow searchlight use with night vision goggles (NVGs) without illuminating the crew’s position to ground observers. Furthermore, IR-compatible units integrate directly with forward-looking infrared (FLIR) sensor suites already installed on tactical helicopters.

Gimbal-mounted units provide 360-degree azimuth rotation and high-tilt angles for full ground coverage below the aircraft. Gyroscopic stabilization keeps the beam on a target during maneuvers. Additionally, autonomous slaving systems lock the searchlight onto a moving person, vehicle, or vessel and track it automatically. Operators control pan, tilt, zoom, and filter selection via joystick, touchscreen, or multi-function display from the cockpit. Mounting hardware fits Bell 407, Bell 429, AS350, and other common rotary-wing platforms used by military and law enforcement operators.
