Handheld Raman
A handheld Raman spectrometer is a portable analytical instrument that identifies unknown chemical substances by directing a focused laser beam at the sample material and measuring the inelastic scattering of light returned from the molecular structure of the target compound. When photons from the laser interact with chemical bonds within the sample, a small fraction scatter at shifted wavelengths corresponding to the vibrational energy levels of the molecule. This shift pattern, known as the Raman spectrum, functions as a molecular fingerprint unique to each chemical compound and is matched against an onboard reference library to produce a substance identification result within seconds.
Laser wavelengths used in handheld Raman instruments include 785nm, 830nm, and 1064nm, with 1064nm excitation providing the most effective fluorescence rejection for real-world samples that would overwhelm shorter wavelength systems with broadband fluorescence emission masking the Raman signal. Spectral resolution on professional handheld instruments ranges from 8 to 12 cm⁻¹, sufficient to distinguish between closely related chemical compounds including explosive isomers and structurally similar narcotic substances.
