Ground Penetrating Radar - GPR Systems
Ground penetrating radar systems are subsurface investigation instruments that transmit pulsed electromagnetic signals into the ground or structural materials and record the reflected energy returned when those signals encounter boundaries between materials with differing dielectric properties. The complete GPR system consists of a control unit handling signal generation, data acquisition, and display processing, one or more antenna units containing the transmitter and receiver elements, a survey distance measurement wheel or encoder, and a display screen rendering the subsurface cross-section as a radargram in real time during the survey. Systems are available in integrated single-unit formats combining all components into one portable instrument and modular formats where the control unit and antenna connect via cable or wireless link.
Antenna frequency selection determines the balance between depth penetration and spatial resolution. Antennas operating at 100 MHz to 250 MHz penetrate to depths of 5 to 15 meters in low-loss soils for utility mapping and geological investigation. Frequencies between 400 MHz and 900 MHz target depths of 1 to 4 meters for road layer assessment, archaeological survey, and utility locating. High-frequency antennas at 1.6 GHz to 2.6 GHz resolve features at depths of 0 to 600mm within concrete structures for rebar, conduit, and void detection. Multi-channel array systems deploy multiple antennas simultaneously to generate three-dimensional subsurface volume data in a single survey pass.
