A Four-Point Probe is a precision contact measurement tool consisting of four equally spaced, spring-loaded probe tips arranged in a collinear configuration on a single probe head, used to measure the electrical sheet resistance and bulk resistivity of flat material samples including semiconductor wafers, thin conductive films, transparent conducting oxides, graphene layers, doped silicon substrates, and metallic coatings. The four-probe arrangement separates the current-carrying contacts from the voltage-sensing contacts, eliminating probe-to-sample contact resistance from the measurement circuit and producing resistivity values dependent only on the intrinsic electrical properties of the material under test.

The probe tips are manufactured from tungsten carbide, osmium, or rhenium alloy, with tip radii between 30 and 250 micrometers selected based on the film thickness and required contact pressure. Probe spacing — typically 0.5mm, 1.0mm, or 2.0mm between adjacent tips — is fixed by the probe head geometry and must be known precisely to apply the correct geometric conversion factor in resistance calculations. Spring preload on each probe tip is set between 30g and 85g of contact force, balancing reliable electrical contact against risk of film penetration damage on fragile or thin-film samples.

The electrical measurement circuit connects the outer two probes to a precision current source — providing a defined current I between 1 microamp and 100 milliamps depending on sample resistivity — while the inner two probes connect to a high-impedance voltmeter measuring voltage V. Sheet resistance Rs is calculated as Rs = (π/ln2) × (V/I) ≈ 4.532 × (V/I), expressed in ohms per square (Ω/□). Bulk resistivity derives from Rs multiplied by sample thickness.

Manual probe stations position the probe head over sample points by hand, while automated probe systems mount the head on motorized XY stages for wafer mapping across programmed measurement grids.
