Fluorescent Magnetic Particles are finely divided ferromagnetic powders coated with fluorescent dye compounds used in wet or dry magnetic particle inspection (MPI) to detect surface-breaking and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic components under ultraviolet-A (UV-A) illumination. The fluorescent coating converts UV-A excitation at 365nm into visible yellow-green emission at approximately 520nm to 550nm, producing high-contrast indication buildup at crack and discontinuity locations against a dark inspection background that significantly improves detection sensitivity compared to visible color contrast particle methods under equivalent lighting conditions.

Particle composition is iron oxide (Fe₃O₄) or carbonyl iron powder, processed to particle size distributions between 2 and 10 micrometers for wet suspension applications and 40 to 200 micrometers for dry powder methods. Wet method particles are dispersed in water-based or petroleum distillate carrier fluids at bath concentrations maintained between 0.1 and 0.4 mL per 100 mL carrier, as specified under ASTM E709, ISO 9934-2, and ASME Section V inspection standards. The small particle size in wet suspensions maximizes particle mobility within the carrier fluid, enabling migration toward and accumulation at flux leakage fields produced at discontinuity edges under applied or residual magnetization.

Fluorescent brightness is characterized by the fluorescent particle brightness (FPB) value measured in microamperes under standardized UV-A illumination conditions, with higher-grade inspection particles achieving FPB values above 2,000 microamperes, improving indication visibility on components with surface roughness, scale, or residual coating that reduces contrast in lower-brightness formulations.

Dry fluorescent magnetic powders are applied by insufflation or spray on components where wet bath application is impractical — including large weldments, field inspection of structures, and components that cannot be immersed — with particle size optimized for adequate mobility under the air movement generated during application.
