Diode-Pumped Solid-State (DPSS) Lasers
Diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) lasers are optical systems employing semiconductor laser diodes to excite solid-state laser-active media generating coherent light output spanning ultraviolet through infrared wavelengths. The DPSS approach provides superior electrical efficiency, compactness, and beam quality compared to conventional lamp-pumped solid-state systems.
DPSS laser architecture employs high-power laser diodes (typically 808nm or 940nm wavelength) optically coupled to laser-active crystals or fibres. Nd:YAG (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet) crystals excited by diode pump produce 1.06 micrometre output. Frequency doubling employing nonlinear crystals generates shorter wavelengths — 532nm (green) from 1.06 micrometre — enabling visibility across diverse applications. Ho:YAG systems produce 2.1 micrometre output suitable for surgical and materials processing applications.
Output characteristics span continuous-wave through pulsed modes enabling application-specific optimisation. Power levels range 1–100+ kilowatts depending on configuration. Beam quality specifications approach theoretical diffraction limit enabling tight focusing suitable for precision materials processing or extended-range directed-energy engagement.
Electrical efficiency on DPSS systems reaches 20–50% compared to 5–10% on lamp-pumped systems reducing thermal management requirements enabling compact portable designs. Sealed systems eliminate cooling water complexity.
Applications include precision materials processing (cutting, welding, marking), medical surgery (eye, dermatology, urology), directed-energy weapons, and scientific research.
