Composite Pressure Vessels are high-strength containment structures designed to store gases or liquids under sustained internal pressure, constructed from fiber-reinforced polymer materials rather than conventional steel or aluminum. By wrapping high-tenacity fiber — carbon fiber, aramid (Kevlar), or fiberglass — around a thin metallic or polymer liner in precisely oriented patterns, composite vessels achieve pressure ratings comparable to or exceeding all-metal alternatives at a fraction of the weight, making them particularly valuable in applications where weight reduction directly affects operational performance.

Vessel construction follows one of four recognized type classifications: Type I (all metal), Type II (metal liner with partial fiber wrap), Type III (metal liner with full composite overwrap), and Type IV (polymer liner with full composite overwrap). Type III and Type IV vessels are the predominant formats in high-performance applications, with carbon fiber overwrapped Type IV vessels achieving weight reductions of 60 to 70 percent compared to equivalent steel cylinders at the same working pressure rating.

Working pressure ratings on composite vessels range from 200 bar for standard compressed gas cylinders up to 700 bar for hydrogen fuel storage applications. Hydrostatic burst pressure typically exceeds working pressure by a factor of 2.25 to 2.5 as required by international certification standards including ISO 11119, EN 12245, and DOT CFFC regulations.

Applications include self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) cylinders for firefighters and CBRN responders, compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicle fuel tanks, aviation emergency oxygen systems, paintball and airsoft high-pressure air (HPA) systems, and hydrogen storage for fuel cell platforms.
