Composite Ballistic Protection
Composite Ballistic Protection refers to armor systems constructed from layered combinations of two or more dissimilar materials engineered to defeat ballistic threats more effectively than any single material could achieve independently. By combining the distinct mechanical properties of materials such as ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), aramid fiber, ceramic strike faces, and steel or titanium backing plates, composite armor distributes and absorbs projectile energy across multiple material interfaces, reducing both penetration depth and backface deformation transmitted to the wearer or protected surface.
Hard armor composite plates used in plate carriers typically consist of a ceramic strike face — commonly alumina (Al₂O₃), silicon carbide (SiC), or boron carbide (B₄C) — bonded to a UHMWPE or woven aramid backing panel. The ceramic layer fractures the projectile on initial impact, while the high-tenacity fiber backing captures fragmented projectile material and absorbs residual energy. Standard plate dimensions follow SAPI and ESAPI sizing conventions — Small (184mm x 292mm), Medium (241mm x 318mm), and Large (267mm x 343mm) — with weights ranging from 1.4kg to 3.5kg per plate depending on protection level and material composition.
Soft composite armor integrates woven or unidirectional UHMWPE layers with aramid fiber panels to provide flexible, concealable ballistic protection against handgun rounds and fragmentation, rated to NIJ Level IIA, II, or IIIA standards. Standalone and in-conjunction (ICW) composite plate configurations address NIJ Level III and IV rifle threat ratings.
Vehicle, structural, and aircraft composite ballistic protection panels follow similar material principles scaled to larger surface areas and heavier threat profiles.
In Pakistan, composite ballistic protection is procured by military units, law enforcement agencies, VIP protection details, and armored vehicle manufacturers requiring certified threat-rated coverage.
Tactical Supply Pakistan supplies composite ballistic protection products across soft armor, hard plate, and structural panel categories for defense and security procurement nationwide.
