A carbon dioxide (CO2) gas NDIR sensor is a non-dispersive infrared optical element that detects and quantifies CO2 concentration through measurement of infrared light absorption at the characteristic 4.26 micrometre wavelength, enabling integration into portable or fixed CO2 monitoring systems without requiring consumable reagents or active gas flowing through the sensor. The NDIR approach provides selectivity and stability superior to electrochemical alternatives.

The NDIR sensor architecture employs an infrared light source (typically heated filament or LED), measurement chamber where sample gas flows or static air resides, and photodetector measuring transmitted infrared intensity. CO2 molecules absorb photons at 4.26 micrometres proportional to concentration, with transmitted light intensity declining as CO2 concentration increases. Signal processing converts detector output to quantitative CO2 concentration through calibration algorithms compensating for temperature and pressure variations affecting gas density.

Measurement specifications typically achieve sensitivity detecting CO2 concentration changes as small as 1 ppm, with measurement range spanning 0–10,000 ppm accommodating applications from ambient outdoor air (approximately 410 ppm) through high-concentration industrial or respiratory gas monitoring. Cross-reactivity with other gases is minimal — water vapour and other common atmospheric components do not significantly interfere with 4.26 micrometre absorption measurement.
