Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM)
A vibrating sample magnetometer measures the magnetic properties of a small material sample by oscillating it within a uniform magnetic field and detecting the resulting voltage signal induced in nearby pickup coils. The sample mounts on a rod connected to a mechanical or piezoelectric vibrator, oscillating at a fixed frequency, typically around 40-80Hz, with amplitude usually set between 1 and 2mm during measurement. This vibration causes a changing magnetic flux that pickup coils detect, converting it into a voltage signal proportional to the sample’s magnetic moment.
Field strength from the surrounding electromagnet typically reaches 1 to 3 Tesla on standard laboratory systems, strong enough to saturate most ferromagnetic materials and reveal their full magnetic behavior across a hysteresis loop. Sample size handled by most systems stays small, generally under 1cm in any dimension, since larger samples introduce measurement errors from non-uniform field exposure across the material. Sensitivity on research-grade systems reaches down to 10^-6 emu, letting researchers detect faint magnetic signals in thin films, nanoparticles, and weakly magnetic materials that other methods might miss.
Temperature control accessories extend testing range on many systems, letting researchers measure magnetic properties from cryogenic temperatures near absolute zero up to several hundred degrees Celsius, revealing how magnetic behavior shifts with temperature for a given material. Data output feeds directly into analysis software, plotting hysteresis loops, coercivity, and saturation magnetization values automatically rather than requiring manual calculation from raw voltage readings.
Materials science labs use VSM systems to characterize new magnetic materials during development, from permanent magnets to data storage media. University research departments use them for coursework and thesis research involving magnetic property analysis. Quality control labs at magnet manufacturing facilities also rely on VSM testing to verify product specifications before shipment.
Tactical Supply Pakistan supplies vibrating sample magnetometers to materials science labs, university research departments, and quality control facilities across Pakistan. Field strength and temperature range are matched to each lab’s research requirements during consultation.
