Sondes
Sondes are battery-powered signal transmitters inserted into buried pipes, drains, conduits, and boreholes to enable surface detection and route mapping of underground structures that standard electromagnetic pipe locators cannot detect. Non-metallic pipes including PVC, HDPE, clay, and concrete contain no conductor for electromagnetic induction. A sonde resolves this by transmitting a locatable signal from inside the pipe itself, allowing the surface operator to track its position using a compatible locator receiver above ground.
Sonde transmitters operate at standard locating frequencies. Common options include 512 Hz, 8 kHz, 33 kHz, and 640 Hz. The 512 Hz frequency suits most drain and service pipe tracing tasks. It matches the sonde tracking mode on the majority of current electromagnetic locator receiver models. Outer diameters run from 16mm on mini sonde variants for small-bore access up to 65mm on large-bore drain inspection models. Additionally, waterproof polymer or stainless steel sealed housing protects internal electronics during operation in water-filled sewers and submerged drain sections. Battery type uses standard alkaline cells. Operating duration runs between 8 and 40 hours depending on sonde size and battery capacity.
Push rod sondes attach to standard drain rod sections through threaded or friction-fit end couplings. Survey crews drive these through the pipe bore from an access chamber using rod extension sections. Freely flowing sondes travel under gravity or water flow through the pipe system. Furthermore, detection depth above ground reaches between 3 and 8 meters depending on transmitter power, receiver sensitivity, and soil conductivity at the survey site. Depth accuracy on compatible locator receivers runs within plus or minus 5% of actual sonde depth under favorable conditions.
Signal output stays consistent through plastic, clay, concrete, and bitumen pipe materials. Soil moisture and conductivity affect signal attenuation at the surface. Moreover, most sonde models ship with spare batteries, a carry pouch, and connection adapters for push rod and drain rod attachment. This simplifies field kit preparation before deployment to drain survey and utility mapping sites across Pakistan’s urban and rural infrastructure.
