Sonde Detector

Sonde detectors are surface electromagnetic receiver instruments. They track battery-powered sonde transmitters inserted inside buried pipes, conduits, or boreholes. The operator walks the surface above the pipe route. The detector marks position and measures burial depth without excavation. Drainage contractors, utility maintenance teams, and civil engineering survey crews across Pakistan use sonde detectors to map non-metallic buried pipes that standard locators cannot detect.

The receiver coil tunes to the sonde transmitter frequency. Common frequencies include 512 Hz, 8 kHz, and 33 kHz. Signal strength peaks directly above the sonde position. A variable-pitch audio tone rises with increasing signal strength. This guides the operator along the pipe centerline. No constant screen observation is needed during the survey walk. Additionally, depth estimation displays calculated burial depth in centimeters on the receiver screen. Accuracy runs within plus or minus 5% of actual depth under favorable soil conditions.

Multi-frequency models switch between sonde tracking frequencies through a front panel selector. This suits sites using different sonde transmitters simultaneously. Some models also detect standard pipe locating frequencies on the same receiver. Consequently, operators combine sonde tracking and active pipe locating in a single instrument. Furthermore, signal direction indicators show whether the sonde lies ahead or behind the operator. This simplifies initial sonde position acquisition after inserting the transmitter at a distant access point.

Receiver housing uses impact-resistant ABS or rubber-over-moulded construction. IP65 ratings protect against dust and water ingress during outdoor use. Battery operation on AA alkaline cells provides between 15 and 30 hours per charge. Moreover, receiver wand weight runs between 0.8 and 1.5 kilograms including batteries.
