Laser Doppler Blood FlowMeter
Laser Doppler blood flowmeters measure microvascular blood perfusion in real time by illuminating tissue with low-power laser light and analyzing the frequency shift in backscattered light caused by moving red blood cells. This Doppler shift — proportional to the velocity and concentration of red blood cells in the measurement volume — gives clinicians and researchers a continuous, non-invasive readout of local tissue perfusion without puncturing vessels or interrupting blood flow.
The measurement principle uses a fiber optic probe delivering laser light to a tissue surface area of 0.5 to 1mm² and collecting backscattered light through adjacent collecting fibers. Single-mode probes use one delivery and one collecting fiber with 0.5mm separation. Multi-fiber probes such as the Moor MP1/7-V2 use eight collecting fibers in a 2mm ring around one central delivery fiber — increasing signal averaging and reducing single-point sampling variability. Furthermore, measurement penetration depth reaches approximately 1mm into tissue, sampling capillary beds in skin, mucosa, cortical tissue, and organ surfaces depending on probe placement.
The ADInstruments Blood FlowMeter connects via USB to a host PC and streams real-time perfusion data directly into LabChart acquisition software with automatic device recognition and channel pre-configuration. The Oxford Optronix OxyFlo Pro offers 2-channel and 4-channel configurations for simultaneous multi-site perfusion monitoring — incorporating proprietary motion artifact rejection technology that filters signal spikes from breathing movement and cable handling without corrupting the underlying perfusion signal. One-time factory pre-calibration on probe shipment eliminates routine recalibration procedures between experiments. Additionally, the OxyFlo Pro pairs with the OxyLite tissue oxygen monitor — co-registering perfusion and tissue pO₂ data from the same site simultaneously for complete microcirculatory assessment.
Clinical applications include intraoperative tissue viability assessment during reconstructive surgery, peripheral vascular disease diagnosis, diabetic neuropathy monitoring, wound healing research, and drug pharmacology studies measuring vasoactive compound effects on microcirculation.
