Heading sensors measure the directional orientation of a platform relative to magnetic north or a defined reference point. They supply real-time heading data to navigation systems, autopilots, stabilized payloads, and command interfaces across UAVs, ground vehicles, naval vessels, and soldier-worn navigation equipment. Without accurate heading data, autonomous platforms drift off course and stabilized sensors lose their pointing reference.

These sensors use three core technologies. Magnetometers detect Earth’s magnetic field to determine absolute heading. Gyroscopes measure angular velocity around all three axes. Accelerometers identify gravitational vectors to calculate attitude. Furthermore, sensor fusion processors combine all three data streams through Kalman filtering algorithms to deliver stable, low-latency heading output even during dynamic maneuvers or vibration-heavy environments.

Performance tiers vary considerably across available units. Consumer-grade MEMS heading sensors deliver heading accuracy of 1–2 degrees. In contrast, tactical-grade units achieve heading accuracy below 0.03 degrees with gyro noise as low as 0.08°/√hr and accelerometer noise at 6µg. Compact OEM modules weigh as little as 12 grams and consume under 0.3 watts — directly suitable for small UAV integration without impacting flight endurance. Output data rates reach up to 250Hz on high-bandwidth tactical units, providing the fast update cycles needed for gimbal stabilization and precise autonomous flight control.

Additionally, dual-antenna GNSS-aided heading sensors deliver heading accuracy independent of magnetic interference — critical in environments with heavy metal structures, electromagnetic interference, or deliberate jamming. These systems maintain accurate heading estimates in GNSS-degraded conditions by fusing inertial data with available positioning inputs.
