Handheld Nuclear Radiation Detector
A handheld nuclear radiation detector is a portable instrument used to detect, measure, and identify ionizing radiation emitted by radioactive materials including alpha particles, beta particles, gamma rays, and neutrons depending on the detector type and sensor configuration. These instruments are carried by radiation safety officers, military CBRN teams, customs and border control personnel, nuclear facility workers, and emergency first responders to identify the presence of radioactive materials, assess exposure dose rates, and locate radiation sources in field environments without laboratory equipment.
Detector technologies vary by radiation type. Neutron detection requires dedicated He-3 or lithium-6 based sensor elements, as standard gamma detectors are insensitive to neutron radiation.
