Ground-penetrating radar is a non-destructive investigation technique that uses pulsed electromagnetic energy to image the interior of opaque materials and the subsurface of soil, rock, concrete, asphalt, and ice without requiring physical excavation or surface damage. The technique functions by transmitting short-duration radar pulses from an antenna into the target medium and recording the travel time and amplitude of reflected energy returned when those pulses encounter interfaces between materials with differing dielectric permittivity values. Each reflection represents a boundary between two materials, and the two-way travel time of the reflected pulse is converted to depth using the known or estimated electromagnetic wave velocity within the host material.

Radar wave velocity in the target medium is a critical parameter for accurate depth calculation. In dry concrete, wave velocity approximates 0.12 meters per nanosecond, while in moist soil it reduces to 0.06 meters per nanosecond or lower, directly affecting depth estimation accuracy if the correct velocity value is not applied during data interpretation. Velocity can be determined from known-depth reflectors on site or through common midpoint surveys.

Survey data is rendered as a two-dimensional radargram displaying depth on the vertical axis and horizontal distance on the scan line on the horizontal axis. Buried objects and layer boundaries appear as characteristic reflection patterns, with point targets such as pipes and rebars producing hyperbolic signatures whose shape encodes both depth and wave velocity information.
