GPS Sensor
A GPS sensor is an electronic module or standalone device that receives signals from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) constellations to calculate and output real-time position, velocity, and time data for the platform or system it is integrated into. The sensor acquires ranging signals from multiple satellites simultaneously, using the time-of-flight differences between received signals to compute a three-dimensional position fix expressed in latitude, longitude, and altitude coordinates. Receiver sensitivity, channel count, and supported frequency bands determine acquisition speed, tracking reliability, and positional accuracy across different operational environments.
Entry-level single-frequency GPS sensors operating on the L1 band deliver horizontal position accuracy of 2.5 to 5 meters CEP under open sky conditions. Multi-constellation receivers tracking GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, and Galileo simultaneously improve fix reliability in partially obstructed environments such as urban areas and dense terrain. Dual-frequency L1/L2 receivers with RTK correction capability achieve sub-centimeter horizontal accuracy when operating within range of a reference station or receiving NTRIP correction data over a network connection.
Output data is delivered through serial UART, USB, SPI, or I2C interfaces depending on the module form factor, with NMEA 0183 sentence format being the standard protocol for position, velocity, and time data across most integration platforms. Update rates range from 1 Hz on standard navigation modules to 20 Hz or higher on dynamic application sensors used in UAVs, robotics, and vehicle tracking systems.
