CHIRP-Ready Transom Mount
A CHIRP-ready transom mount is an underwater sonar transducer assembly mounted on a boat’s transom (rear section) enabling deployment without requiring through-hull drilling or internal plumbing modifications. The transom mount design provides accessibility for installation, maintenance, and replacement without disrupting cabin interiors or requiring specialised marine contractors.
CHIRP-ready transducers employ dual-frequency operation spanning 50kHz to 200kHz enabling simultaneous multi-frequency transmission improving target discrimination and range resolution compared to single-frequency systems. Frequency-swept excitation through CHIRP processing improves signal-to-noise ratio through matched filtering analysis across frequency spectrum. Transducer orientation typically positions elements downward at small forward-tilt angles optimising detection of targets directly beneath and slightly forward of the vessel.
Transom mounting provisions employ stainless steel or polymer brackets securing transducers rigidly to the hull structure preventing movement during boat acceleration or wave shock that would degrade sonar performance. Cable routing employs water-resistant connectors rated for submerged operation, with cable length typically extending 10–20 metres enabling connection to helm-mounted display units.
Operational deployment requires transducer positioning below waterline to achieve acoustic coupling preventing air reflection obscuring targets. Mounting height adjustment enables compensation for different hull designs optimising transducer depth relative to boat operation conditions.
