Cable Avoidance Tools

Cable avoidance tools (CAT) are portable electronic devices that detect and locate underground utility cables through electromagnetic induction or radio frequency signal detection, enabling construction workers and utility maintenance personnel to identify cable positions before excavation preventing accidental strikes causing electrical shock, service disruption, or explosion hazards. The tool approach provides rapid utility identification eliminating manual probing risk.

Premium cable avoidance tools employ dual-mode operation combining active transmitter induction at low frequencies (typically 8kHz, 32kHz, or 131kHz) with passive detection of stray electromagnetic fields radiated by energised power cables. Active mode transmitters induce detectable signals in conductive cables through ground contact points or direct coupling, with receiver units displaying signal strength and bearing indication guiding operators to underground cable positions. Passive mode detection identifies the direction to energised cables through analysis of radiated electromagnetic fields without requiring transmitter activation.

Detection sensitivity achieves identification of low-voltage cables at depths typically 1–2 metres, with high-voltage power cables detectable at greater depths through passive-mode operation exploiting higher electromagnetic field intensity. Depth estimation algorithms provide preliminary depth indication enabling excavation planning at appropriate safety distances above detected cables.

Colour-coded display systems enable rapid operator interpretation — green indicating safe distance, yellow indicating proximity, red indicating cable directly overhead. Audible tone feedback enables hands-free operation guiding excavator bucket positioning away from detected utilities.
