A Bendi locator sonde is a compact electronic transmitter buried or placed within underground utility lines, pipes, or cables to enable above-ground detection and precise location mapping using a compatible portable receiver unit. The sonde emits continuous RF signals at frequencies typically between 8kHz and 33kHz, allowing operators to trace utility routes, identify underground infrastructure hazards before excavation, and mark utility locations on surface maps for safe construction planning.

The sonde hardware consists of a waterproof cylindrical enclosure 15–25mm diameter and 80–150mm length, containing a lithium battery rated for 40–80 hours continuous operation and an RF transmitter circuit coupled to an external antenna coil. The sonde is inserted into drain lines, water pipes, or cable ducts through clean-out ports or direct insertion points, with buoyancy or weight characteristics allowing drift through flowing water systems or positioning at stationary target locations.

The portable receiver unit detects the sonde’s RF signal through ground conduction, displaying signal strength on an LCD screen and emitting audible tone feedback as the operator sweeps the search area. Directional antenna configurations on advanced receivers enable triangulation of sonde position, allowing operators to mark utility locations with centimetre-level precision on surface maps. Maximum detection range typically extends 3–6 metres horizontally from the sonde depending on soil conductivity and RF frequency — sandy or rocky soil reduces signal propagation compared to clay or loam.

Frequency selection allows multiple sondes to operate simultaneously — different frequency assignments prevent cross-interference when mapping complex multi-utility corridors. Standard colour-coding associates frequencies with utility types — sonde colour and receiver display frequency enable operator to distinguish water, gas, electrical, and telecommunications infrastructure.

In Pakistan, Bendi locator sondes support utility mapping for construction projects, disaster response infrastructure assessment, and municipal utility management across major cities and provincial infrastructure development programmes.

Tactical Supply Pakistan supplies Bendi locator sondes and compatible receiver units for utility location and infrastructure mapping applications.
