Thermal Lance Cutting
Thermal lance cutting is a rapid metal and structural material cutting technique that uses an exothermic chemical reaction or sustained electric arc to generate extreme heat enabling penetration through steel plate, reinforced concrete, and other structural obstacles. This method provides emergency access and material removal capability during rescue operations, military demolition, and structural modification without requiring large mechanical equipment or extended setup time.
Cutting mechanism employs iron powder combined with oxygen generating sustained combustion at temperatures exceeding 3,000 degrees Celsius. The intense heat melts steel and vaporizes concrete, creating a cutting channel through the target material. Oxygen supply maintains combustion intensity throughout the cutting duration. Consumable lance tubes burned during cutting require replacement between cuts, with multiple spares enabling sequential cuts without repositioning delays.
Operational procedures position the thermal lance against the target surface and ignite the chemical reaction. Gravity and operator manipulation advance the cutting zone downward or laterally through the material. Water cooling systems prevent excessive heat damage to surrounding structures and the operator’s equipment. Safety protocols including heat-resistant protective gear and ventilation management address hazards from extreme temperatures and combustion byproducts.
Cutting speed depends on material thickness and composition. Steel plate typically cuts at 10 to 20 centimeters per minute. Concrete cutting is slower requiring longer lance dwell time. Multiple parallel cuts enable removal of large structural members or creation of wide access openings.
In Pakistan, military demolition uses thermal lance cutting for facility modification and structural dismantling. Rescue teams employ it for emergency victim access during building collapses. EOD personnel use it for barrier penetration. Industrial demolition contractors utilize it for controlled structural steel cutting.
Tactical Supply Pakistan supplies thermal lance cutting equipment and services for military, rescue, EOD, and industrial demolition applications across Pakistan.
