Special Gases Distribution System
Special gases distribution systems deliver controlled flows of pure and mixed specialty gases from storage cylinders or bulk supply sources to point-of-use equipment across laboratory, industrial, and military facility installations. These systems handle gases including calibration standards, carrier gases, specialty process gases, medical gases, and hazardous gas mixtures that require dedicated distribution infrastructure separate from standard compressed air and nitrogen supply networks.
The distribution system consists of a cylinder manifold at the supply point, a primary pressure regulator reducing storage pressure to line pressure, a distribution pipework network, point-of-use secondary regulators, and safety devices including excess flow valves, check valves, and emergency isolation valves at critical points along the distribution route. Manifold configurations connect multiple cylinders in parallel, providing continuous supply through automatic switchover from depleted cylinders to full cylinders without interrupting gas flow to connected equipment. Additionally, manifold materials use 316L stainless steel or electropolished internals for high-purity gas service where contamination from pipework surfaces would degrade gas quality below the specification required at the point of use.
Distribution pipework uses seamless stainless steel or copper tube depending on the gas compatibility and purity requirements of the specific gas service. Tube sizes run from 6mm OD for low-flow laboratory point-of-use drops up to 25mm OD for high-flow process supply mains serving multiple extraction points simultaneously. Furthermore, all joints in high-purity distribution systems use orbital welding or compression fittings with PTFE or metal-to-metal seals, eliminating elastomer seal materials that outgas into the distribution pipework and contaminate sensitive analytical and process gas supplies.
Pressure regulation stages reduce storage cylinder pressure of 200 to 300 bar down to working line pressure between 2 and 10 bar at the primary stage, with secondary point-of-use regulators providing final pressure control matched to each connected instrument’s inlet specification. Moreover, gas detection systems monitor distribution spaces for leaks of toxic and flammable specialty gases, with alarm outputs triggering automatic emergency isolation valve closure to prevent hazardous gas accumulation in enclosed facility spaces.
