Sonar and Transducers
Sonar and transducer systems use acoustic energy to detect, locate, and characterize objects underwater. Optical and radar systems cannot penetrate water beyond a few meters. Sonar fills this gap across naval, security, and survey applications. Naval vessels, port security teams, hydrographic survey operators, and fisheries authorities across Pakistan use these systems for underwater threat detection, depth measurement, and seabed mapping.
Sonar falls into active and passive categories. Active sonar transmits an acoustic pulse toward the water. It measures the echo returning from submerged objects. Range calculates from two-way travel time. Bearing calculates from transducer array geometry. Passive sonar listens only, detecting acoustic energy from vessel propellers, machinery noise, and diver breathing apparatus. It reveals no presence to the target. Additionally, single-beam echo sounders use one transducer element to measure depth directly below the vessel. Multibeam systems use transducer arrays covering 120 to 150 degrees perpendicular to the vessel track. These map full seabed bathymetry in a single pass without multiple survey runs.
Transducer construction uses piezoelectric ceramic elements. These convert electrical signals into acoustic pressure waves during transmission. They reverse the conversion during reception. Operating frequencies run from 20 kHz for long-range deep water applications up to 1 MHz for high-resolution shallow water work. Lower frequencies travel farther through water. Higher frequencies resolve smaller targets and finer seabed detail. Furthermore, transducer beam angles run between 5 and 30 degrees full cone angle. Narrower beams provide better angular resolution for target discrimination and seabed mapping tasks.
Mounting configurations cover hull-mounted installations, tow-body deployments, and portable over-the-side bracket mounts. Moreover, output interfaces include NMEA 0183, NMEA 2000 CAN bus, and Ethernet connections. These integrate with vessel navigation systems, hydrographic survey software, and sonar processing workstations across Pakistan’s naval and survey vessel fleets.
