Side scanning transducers send acoustic beams out to both sides of a survey path, building a wide image of the underwater floor instead of the narrow strip a standard downward sonar covers. Beam angle typically spreads 90 to 130 degrees on each side, mounted on a boat’s transom, through-hull fitting, or a towed body trailing behind the vessel on a cable. Frequency choices usually run from 455kHz for general use up to 800-900kHz for sharper close-range detail, with lower frequencies reaching further at the cost of some image clarity.
Combined coverage across both sides typically reaches 100 to 150 metres per pass, letting a single run cover far more ground than a straight-down sonar beam at the same boat speed. Effective depth range runs from shallow water down to 60 metres or more, depending on transducer power and water clarity, with murky or sediment-heavy water reducing maximum effective range somewhat. Housing is usually a hardened polymer shell, built to survive contact with submerged rocks, debris, or accidental dock strikes during regular use.
Mounting brackets allow angle and depth adjustment below the waterline, letting the operator fine-tune image quality based on boat speed and water conditions during a survey run. Output connects to a compatible display unit, showing the scanned image in real time alongside standard sonar depth data on the same screen for easier interpretation during operation.
