Side Imaging Transducer

A side imaging transducer sends sonar beams outward to both sides of a boat, building a detailed picture of the lake or riverbed structure across a wide area rather than just directly beneath the hull. The transducer mounts on the transom or through a trolling motor bracket, angling its beam pattern outward at roughly 90-130 degrees from the boat’s path on each side. Frequency output typically runs at 455kHz or 800kHz-900kHz, with higher frequencies giving sharper detail at closer range and lower frequencies reaching further out at slightly reduced clarity.

Coverage width extends up to 100-150 metres total, combining both left and right beam coverage, letting an operator scan a wide swath of underwater terrain while moving at normal boating speed. Depth range for side imaging typically covers 1.5 to 60 metres effectively, beyond which image clarity drops as the sonar signal weakens with distance. Housing material is usually a durable polymer, rated for continuous underwater use and resistant to impact from submerged debris or accidental contact with a dock or rocks.

Mounting hardware includes adjustable brackets, letting the operator set transducer angle and depth below the waterline for optimal image quality based on boat speed and water conditions. Cable connections run to a compatible fish finder or chart plotter display, showing the side-scan image alongside standard depth and structure readings on the same screen.
