Security Radar

Security radar detects movement across open ground, water, or airspace by sending out radio waves and reading the signal that bounces back from an object. Ground surveillance radar units typically cover ranges from 500 metres up to 10-20 kilometres, depending on power output and antenna size, useful for spotting vehicles or people approaching a perimeter long before a camera could pick them up in poor light or fog. Detection works regardless of darkness or weather, since radar doesn’t rely on visible light like a standard camera sensor.

Most systems classify detected objects by size and movement pattern, separating a person from a vehicle or an animal, reducing false alerts triggered by wildlife or blowing debris. Update rates run several times per second, tracking a moving target’s speed and direction in real time on a connected display. Integration with cameras lets the radar automatically slew a PTZ camera toward a detected target, giving an operator visual confirmation without manually searching the area first.

Power draw varies by range and antenna size, with smaller perimeter units running on 12V-24V DC power and larger long-range systems needing mains or generator power. Mounting options include a fixed tower, a rotating mast, or a vehicle-mounted unit for mobile deployment during temporary operations. Weatherproof housing, usually rated IP65 or higher, protects internal electronics from rain, dust, and extreme heat during outdoor installation.

Border security units use radar to monitor long stretches of open terrain where fence-mounted sensors alone can’t cover the full distance. Airports use radar for runway and perimeter monitoring, catching unauthorized ground vehicles or wildlife before they create a safety hazard. Ports and coastal facilities also use marine radar variants to track vessel movement approaching restricted waters.
