Searchlight

A searchlight throws a concentrated high-intensity beam over long distances, used for spotting objects or people in darkness across open water, roads, or perimeter zones. Most tactical and marine units use a Xenon or LED bulb, with LED versions gaining ground due to longer bulb life and lower power draw. Beam distance ranges from 500 metres for smaller handheld or vehicle-mounted units up to 3-5 kilometres for large fixed-mount marine searchlights. Beam width adjusts on most models, narrowing to a tight spot for long-range identification or widening to flood a broader area at closer range.

Power sources vary by mounting type. Vehicle-mounted units run off the vehicle’s 12V or 24V electrical system, while handheld units use rechargeable battery packs lasting 1 to 4 hours on full brightness, longer at reduced output settings. Larger fixed searchlights, common on patrol boats and towers, connect to mains or generator power for continuous operation during extended watch periods. Housing material is usually aluminum or stainless steel, both resistant to corrosion from saltwater spray or humid coastal air.

Mounting options include a swivel base for manual aiming, a joystick-controlled remote head for operation from inside a vehicle or vessel cabin, and tripod stands for temporary ground deployment. Some models add an IR filter option, letting the light work with night vision equipment without giving away a visible light source to the naked eye.

Coast guard and navy patrol boats use searchlights to scan for vessels or people in the water during night operations. Border security and perimeter patrol units use vehicle-mounted versions to sweep open ground along fence lines. Search and rescue teams also rely on searchlights during night operations in flood-affected or remote areas.
