Robust General Purpose Optical Trigger
A general purpose optical trigger fires a signal when a beam of light gets broken or reflected back, without any physical contact needed. An infrared or visible-light emitter sits on one side. A receiver sits on the other, or in the same housing for reflective models. When an object crosses the beam, the trigger sends an output signal, usually a relay closure or voltage pulse, to whatever system it’s connected to. Detection range varies from under 1 metre for compact models up to 20 metres or more for long-range industrial versions.
Response time typically falls under 10 milliseconds, fast enough to catch objects moving at speed without missing the trigger point. Housings are usually aluminum or reinforced polymer, rated IP65 or higher for outdoor use in dust, rain, or direct sun. Mounting brackets allow angle adjustment, so the beam lines up correctly across doorways, gates, or production lines. Power draw stays low, often under 100mA, letting the trigger run off a small battery pack or standard 12V/24V supply.
Security perimeter systems use optical triggers to detect intrusion along fence lines or building entry points, sending an alert the moment someone crosses the beam.
