Reactive Jamming
Reactive jamming is an electronic warfare technique where a jamming transmitter detects incoming threat radar or communication signals, analyzes their characteristics, and rapidly generates a jamming response signal specifically tuned to disrupt or degrade the detected threat signal. Unlike pre-planned jamming that operates continuously across anticipated threat frequencies, reactive jamming conserves power and reduces detectability by only jamming when an actual threat signal is present and only at the frequencies where that threat operates.
Detection of threat signals occurs through RF scanning receivers monitoring a wide frequency range for characteristic signals from known threat radar systems or communication platforms. Upon detection, the reactive jammer analyzes modulation characteristics, carrier frequency, and transmission pattern to identify the specific threat source. Jamming signal generation then produces interference specifically designed to degrade that particular threat’s performance while minimizing disruption to friendly communications on adjacent frequencies or other bands.
Advantage of reactive jamming over barrage jamming includes significantly reduced power consumption, since the jammer operates only intermittently rather than continuously. This extends battery runtime on mobile platforms and reduces heat generation from high-power transmission. Detectability is also reduced, since the jammer produces minimal RF output when no threat is present, potentially escaping detection by enemy electronic support measures searching for active jamming sources. Disadvantage includes vulnerability during the latency period between threat detection and jamming response generation, where sophisticated threats may complete their transmission before jamming begins.
