Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV)

A pressure reducing valve (PRV) is a flow control device that automatically maintains a downstream pressure below a set threshold by opening to release excess flow whenever downstream pressure rises above the valve’s adjustment setting. PRVs protect piping systems, equipment, and pressure vessels from damage caused by excessive pressure while ensuring adequate pressure remains available for system operation under normal demand conditions.

Valve operation relies on pressure-responsive sensing of downstream conditions. A spring-loaded poppet or diaphragm responds to increasing downstream pressure by opening an internal discharge path, venting excess flow to atmosphere or a return line. This continuous modulation maintains outlet pressure within a narrow band around the set point across changing inlet pressures and varying demand flow rates. Pilot-operated PRV designs use a small pilot stage sensing downstream pressure to control a larger main stage valve, improving response speed and flow capacity compared to direct-acting designs on systems requiring high flow or rapid pressure changes.

Outlet pressure adjustment through a manual screw mechanism allows technicians to set the valve to the system’s required pressure specification within the valve’s rated range. Pressure gauges upstream and downstream of the valve provide operators with visual confirmation of inlet and outlet pressures, supporting system commissioning and troubleshooting. Relief valves differ from PRVs by venting excess flow to atmosphere regardless of downstream demand, while PRVs attempt to maintain a specific downstream pressure through proportional valve modulation.
