Portable Explosive Detectors
Portable explosive detectors identify trace explosive residue and bulk explosive materials at checkpoints, border crossings, aviation security points, and tactical search operations. They deliver field-deployable screening capability without laboratory submission delays. Furthermore, they give security teams immediate confirmation of explosive presence at the point of encounter.
Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) is the primary technology in professional portable explosive detectors. The instrument draws a swab sample or ambient air into a heated ionization chamber. Molecules separate by mass and mobility through a drift tube under an applied electric field. The detector matches drift times against a reference library. It identifies RDX, PETN, TNT, TATP, HMTD, and ammonium nitrate at picogram sensitivity levels. Furthermore, swab sampling collects trace residue from surfaces, hands, luggage, and cargo packaging. This detects explosive contact contamination even when bulk material is absent from the search area.
Raman spectroscopy detectors identify bulk explosive materials and chemical precursors through molecular vibration fingerprints. Through-barrier measurement on advanced models identifies substances inside sealed containers without opening them. As a result, officer exposure to sensitive primary explosives during testing reduces significantly. Additionally, fluorescence-based portable detectors use sensor films that respond to trace explosive vapor. These achieve sub-ppb detection limits for TNT, RDX, and peroxide-based compounds in open-air screening environments.
Multi-mode detectors combine IMS and Raman technologies in a single handheld unit. This covers both trace residue detection and bulk material identification from the same instrument. Moreover, standoff laser detection systems including LIBS identify surface explosive residue on vehicles and packages at distances of 10 to 100 meters without physical contact at the checkpoint.
These detectors serve Pakistan’s ANF counter-narcotics and explosives teams, FBR customs units at Karachi Port and Torkham, Pakistan Army EOD pre-search operations, aviation security teams at Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore airports, and Counter Terrorism Department vehicle checkpoint operations.
Tactical Supply Pakistan supplies portable explosive detectors for checkpoint screening, EOD support, aviation security, and counter-terrorism operations procurement across Pakistan.
