Portable Explosive Detector

Portable explosive detectors identify trace explosive compounds and bulk explosive materials at checkpoints, border crossings, and tactical search operations. Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) is the dominant technology in professional portable explosive detectors. The instrument draws a swab sample or ambient air into a heated ionization chamber. Molecules then separate by mass and mobility through a drift tube under an electric field. The detector identifies target compounds from their characteristic drift time. IMS detects RDX, PETN, TNT, TATP, and ammonium nitrate at picogram sensitivity levels. Furthermore, swab sampling collects trace residue from surfaces, hands, luggage, and cargo. This detects contact contamination from explosive handling even when bulk material is absent.

Raman spectroscopy detectors identify bulk explosive materials through molecular vibration fingerprints. Through-barrier measurement identifies substances inside sealed containers and plastic bags. As a result, officer exposure to sensitive primary explosives during testing reduces significantly. Additionally, fluorescence-based detectors use sensor films that change optical properties on contact with trace explosive vapor. These achieve sub-ppb detection limits for TNT, RDX, and peroxide-based explosives in open-air screening.

Standoff explosive detection systems use laser spectroscopy at distances of 10 to 100 meters. They identify surface explosive residue on vehicles and packages without physical contact.
