Pneumatic Ejection Valves
Pneumatic ejection valves control the rapid release of compressed gas into a launch tube or ejection chamber during cold-launch missile and projectile ejection sequences. These valves form the critical flow control component between the stored pressure vessel and the launch tube, determining the pressure rise rate, peak pressure, and gas flow duration that govern ejection velocity and consistency across repeated launch cycles on the same platform.
The valve body uses high-strength steel or aluminum alloy construction, rated for working pressures between 50 and 300 bar depending on the launcher system specifications. Actuation uses a pyrotechnic initiator, solenoid pilot valve, or mechanical trigger mechanism to open the main gas flow path in under 5 milliseconds from fire command receipt. Fast opening time matters significantly for ejection consistency, as slower valve opening produces a gradual pressure rise that reduces peak ejection impulse and increases cycle-to-cycle velocity variation. Additionally, valve bore diameter runs between 20 and 80mm depending on the required gas flow rate and launch tube volume, with larger bore valves supporting heavier missile ejection applications without flow restriction penalties during the critical pressure rise phase.
Sealing components use high-pressure rated elastomer or PTFE seat rings that maintain zero-leak integrity at full storage pressure until actuation, then allow complete flow path opening within the actuation time specification. Furthermore, single-shot pyrotechnic-actuated variants use a shear disc or burst disc that ruptures at a calibrated pressure threshold, providing reliable valve opening without electrical power requirements at the valve itself for applications where electrical failure must not prevent launch capability.
Reusable solenoid-actuated versions support multiple firing cycles from a single valve body, with seal replacement and internal inspection intervals defined by the manufacturer based on cycle count and storage pressure exposure history. Moreover, valve body interfaces use standard NPT, BSP, or custom flange connections matching the pressure vessel and launch tube fittings on the host platform.
