Plate Recognition (VLPR)

Vehicle License Plate Recognition, commonly referred to as VLPR, is an automated imaging and optical character recognition system that reads vehicle registration plates in real time. Traffic police formations, border control agencies, toll collection operators, and security checkpoint operators across Pakistan use VLPR systems. In contrast to manual plate reading, VLPR automates vehicle identification entirely without requiring security personnel input for each passing vehicle.

The system uses a high-resolution camera positioned above or beside the vehicle lane. An infrared LED illumination array provides consistent plate lighting across all ambient light conditions. As a vehicle passes, the camera captures a plate image from the detection zone. Onboard image processing software then locates the plate region within the frame. Additionally, optical character recognition algorithms extract the plate text from the located region. As a result, the system produces a registration number text string within milliseconds of vehicle passage.

The extracted plate number transmits immediately to a central database management system. The system then compares the plate against watchlists, stolen vehicle records, and permit databases. A match triggers an immediate alert on the operator workstation. Furthermore, recognition accuracy on current VLPR systems runs above 95% under standard daytime conditions. Moreover, infrared illumination maintains accuracy above 90% during complete darkness at nighttime security checkpoint positions.

Every vehicle passage logs automatically with plate number, timestamp, lane identifier, and camera image. Consequently, this creates a searchable vehicle movement record for post-incident investigation and traffic analysis.
